Newer PopCap games such as Peggle and Bejeweled 3 use a format called JPEG2000.
JPEG2000 is a wavelet-based lossy compression format which is also used in digital cinema.
JPEG2000 and regular JPEG are neither backwards nor forwards-compatible with each other.
To check whether a PopCap game supports JPEG2000, look for j2k-codec.dll or anything related to it in the game's installation directory. If you find one, that game supports JPEG2000, otherwise, it does not.
Adding the said DLL to a PopCap game that does not have the codec will not work unless you hack the game code. On those games, you must convert such images to PNG (recommended), JPG, or GIF (not recommended) format before use. If using a format other than the original format (e.g. replacing gem2.gif in Bejeweled 2 with a file named gem2.PNG), always remember to delete the original file to prevent conflicts.
